Spread Your Wings and Fly

My mother has cancer. She first got sick in the summer of 2002. Her diagnosis (stage III colon cancer) and first surgery was in October 2002, and then another in February 2004. It started as colon cancer but it has spread to her lymph nodes, ovaries and liver. Following each surgery she had 6 months of chemotherapy. The reaction to the chemotherapy is good and she responds very well. The medical bills for this treatment would easily total $100,000. My mother is lucky though, she has very good insurance. My mother works for the local police department and she has a good job. She has worked there approximately 15 years. The police department offers health insurance and short term disability; there is no long term disability. She has used all her short term disability, and can not take another leave for a session of chemotherapy. In March, the doctor prescribed oral chemotherapy to take so she could keep working. The last session of chemotherapy didn’t have any effect on her liver cancer. The cancer spots continued to grow and now she needs more aggressive treatment. This isn’t possible without losing her job. When she loses her job she loses her insurance and only source of income. My mother has no retirement fund, no back-up, nothing. The only hope is some supplement from Social Security. We will have to find away to pay for her medical expenses. Can we afford Medicare? The outlook for her future isn’t very good.
